Why Local flowers?

At Wild Canary Farm we are absolutely fascinated by flowers.  We grow over 40 varieties in all shapes and sizes including an abundance of Dahlias, our hands down favorites.  Our flowers are sold at local farmer’s markets, thru our cut flower CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) weekly subscriptions and we pop up from place to place to bring them to you direct from our Tiny Flower Truck.

So what’s the big deal, why buy local flowers?

Local Flowers are well, truly local!  Almost 80% of the cut flowers available in the US are imported from South America, Mexico, the Netherlands and Israel.  Imported flowers incur huge transportation and storage costs and carry an enormous carbon footprint.  Imported flowers are often grown unsustainably with unfair labor and arrive with dangerous chemical residue.

Local flowers are truly fresh!  Imported flowers are bred for uniformity and to travel robbing them of natural diversity and fragrance.  Our blooms are cut, arranged and on your table within just a few days and often, the bouquet you choose was in the field that morning!

Local small farms are sustainable!  We strive to produce flowers using responsible farming methods like integrated pest management and diverse cropping systems. We use minimum tillage and bio-dynamic, low-input fertilization programs. We encourage important biodiversity, soil health, and water conservation.

You are supporting a local family business.  Your dollars stay here to drive this local economy and help us create local jobs.  We are dedicated to the vitality of our community, we hope to be here for years to come.

The impact of a bouquet bursting with color is akin to magic. For millennia flowers have symbolized immortality, life and love. Flowers brighten any room.  They fill the day with color and instantly elevate your mood.  Flowers say I love you, they say I’m thinking of you, they say I care.  Flowers are a time, a place, a special person or a story and you are a part of it.
